natural stone repair to outdoor elements at historic home

Fox Chapel, PA / Fall 2020

Project goals: Repair the damaged areas found in the natural stone elements throughout the property, including driveway pillars and planters.

Challenges: All stone restoration needed to be in keeping with the original mid-century modern style — using only the original stone on site. Structures had to be carefully dismantled — removing old mortar and cleaning stones — then meticulously pieced back together. A major issue was that some stones were severely marred due to erosion/water damage.

Strategies: Because there was no other stone supply to pull from, Suzanne created a solution for re-using damaged pieces — reversing the stone and refacing/shaping what had been the “back” of the stone to blend with the others — in order to maintain the original design using the same stone.

Outcome: A solid repair job throughout; a happy client; and the pride of restoring vintage stonework while keeping integrity of the architectural design.

Highlights: Suzanne partnered on this project with Cameron Meadows — a talented mason who also teaches at The Pittsburgh Trade Institute. Cameron is a master at wet-work whose eye for detail and expertise with mortar helped to make this project a success!
