sloped property-front redesign + installation

Morningside, PA / Fall 2020

Project goals: These first-time home owners wanted a complete makeover for their sloped property. They were excited for a new front yard, but as busy professionals wanted a solution with a no-fuss maintenance routine. The goal was to create something light, fun, colorful and easy to include perennials, shrubs, trees, and spring bulbs.

Challenges: The steepness of the slope; excess water/runoff; erosion issues; full sun; and the unexpected challenge of a giant, very deep, old tree root network that the stump grinder couldn’t remove.

Strategies: Install water-loving plants and a network of plantings aimed to combat erosion control. Ample space to feature a few tree-favorites in the unobstructed and sun-washed hillside.

Outcome: A low-maintenance solution that amps up curb-appeal and delivers multi-seasonal interest and color — using a palette of exclusively native and pollinator plants.

Highlights:  Boxwoods add height and interest along the foundation. Flowering Halesia Carolina Silverbell ‘Pink Arnold’ and Amelanchier Serviceberry ‘Ballerina’ provide color, along with a handful of Clethera ‘Ruby Spice’ and lots of lavender. Water-loving perennials include Joe Pye Weed, bee balm, cone flower, and black-eyed susans.
